What else happened in London on 5th May?

As well as the Mayoral election, there were also London Assembly elections across the capital. We provide an overview of the key trends and changes across the capital.

  • Labour have gained the GLA seat of Merton and Wandsworth from the Conservatives. Leonie Cooper won 42% of the vote to give Labour a majority of 2.3%
  • Labour have held Barnet and Camden with an increased majority for Andrew Dismore – in what as a key Conservative target seat
  • The Conservatives held the seats of Bexley and Bromley, West Central and Havering and Redbridge, where they held on by less than 1,500 votes
  • John Biggs stood down as GLA member for City and East so he can concentrate full time on his role as Mayor of Tower Hamlets. Mr Biggs’s replacement, Unmesh Desai, easily won the seat but lost votes compared to 2012
  • Val Shawcross stood down as GLA member for Lambeth and Southwark. Ms Shawcross was respected and extremely knowledgeable on transport issues. Her replacement, Florence Nosegbe easily held the seat for Labour
