The Challenge

Penguin and Random House merged in 2013 to form the world’s leading trade publisher. As one organisation, Penguin Random House lacked a singular narrative articulating the benefits of the combined organisation while celebrating the uniqueness of the individual publishing houses.

The Approach

Portland developed a new narrative which placed employees at the centre. To ensure the new narrative resonated with employees and received buy in from all parts of the organisation, Portland tested the narrative with Penguin Random House’s senior leadership in a series of messaging sessions.

The Outcome

This led to Portland working with Penguin Random House to develop a communication strategy and approach for employee relations, including media training members of the senior management team.
