Although they have controlled South Somerset since 1987, the Liberal Democrats could be punished for their role in the Coalition, which could lead to them losing control of this Council after 28 years in charge. The Liberal Democrats currently have 31 seats to the Conservatives 25.
The Council contains two Liberal Democrat Westminster constituencies: Somerton and Frome, which they are expected to lose, and Yeovil. The Conservatives are sending high profile politicians every day before the election in a big push to win all the Liberal Democrat seats in the West Country, which could act to boost the Conservative vote in the locals.
With UKIP making gains in the 2013 Somerset County Council elections, they may also play a part here.
