My introduction to working in public affairs was through the opportunity of an internship at Cancer Research UK in their public affairs and campaigns team. It was this that sparked my initial interest in health.
When my previous internship was coming to an end I knew I wanted to pursue a role in health and that’s when I came across Portland. I was aware of Portland’s strong reputation and I had a desire to work for a company focused on the most ‘political’ areas of UK policy. From day one I was immersed in the world of health, surrounded by people who are so passionate and knowledgeable about what they do. What really struck me was how integrated I felt from the start. This meant that when my three months came to an end I was fully focused on starting my career at Portland.
I was fortunate enough to be offered a permanent position as an Account Executive in the Health team. I’ve only been in this role for four months and I feel that I have learnt a huge amount in a short space of time. I don’t think that I would have been given the exposure and opportunities I’ve had in this position so far in a role elsewhere.
In addition to the development opportunities within my team, Portland also regularly hold talks from prominent figures from the political to media world to give you an insight into their careers and experiences and help guide you to meet your full potential. I am still at the very beginning of my career at Portland but I am excited to see where it will go.
